Kak Phirom
Story
Born in a refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border during the Cambodian-Vietnamese conflict, Phiromโs early life was filled with hardship. Returning to Siem Reap with his family in 1992, he grew up in a country struggling to recover from decades of war. He works various jobs, from construction to selling livestock to tuk-tuk driving. Phirom never stopped dreaming of a better future and opportunities.
His passion for photography began when a tourist handed him a camera, sparking a love that led him to trade his tuk-tuk for a camera. Despite many initial rejections, Phirom pursued his dream, eventually earning recognition from Tribe Urban Art Gallery, where his solo exhibition, โOne Day, One Way,โ documents everyday life along Cambodiaโs northern rail line.”
I want to take people all around Cambodia. Because Iโm local, I can understand the stories, so I can translate for guests to understand. When they do, they can take better photographs.
